Patients diagnosed with certain cancers including:
- Bladder
- Colorectal (bowel)
- Endometrial
- Liver
- Oesophageal
- Ovarian
- Pancreatic
- Stomach
- Uterine
- Vulval
often report experiencing vague symptoms that they treat with over-the-counter medication, to manage their symptoms before seeing a health care professional. Using information on what products participants purchase and how often could help identify these cancers earlier
The primary goal of this study is to investigate whether or not people have distinctive self-management behaviours prior to seeing their doctor with symptoms that are associated with the various forms of cancer mentioned above.
We will compare up to 6 years of shopping history of
1450 patients with cancer (cases)- we will aim to recruit 250 cases for each of the following cancer types: colorectal (bowel), oesophageal, ovarian and pancreatic. For each of the other six cancers, we will aim to recruit 75 cases per cancer type.

1450 participants without cancer (controls)
using the information collected on the loyalty cards of the two UK based high street retailers:
- Boots
- Tesco

Identity verification documents (proof of ID and address) to satisfy the retailers privacy policies
A questionnaire regarding your health (patients with a cancer diagnosis will have questions about their cancer diagnosis)

People living in the UK
18 years of age and older
diagnosed up to 2 years prior with any of the mentioned cancers (cases)
who have not been diagnosed with any of the cancers mentioned (controls)
have at least one loyalty card from Boots and/or Tesco.
Note: You don't have to be a frequent user or could be buying for everyone else in your household. Matching patients and healthy volunteers will account for similarities and differences.
